My Story

Dr. Michael J. Lenaghan leads and facilitates learning through academic, experiential, simulation, and service learning + civic engagement strategies, rooted in social sciences, informed by “multiple intelligences” theory and skills in cross-cultural communication and relations. He teaches and mentors in the Social Science Department, Honors College, and Center for Individual & Organizational Learning in Miami Dade College. He relishes teaching, learning, and leading in “multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-lingual Miami – microcosm of the world” advancing a wide range of diverse scholars and communities toward sustainable civic, social, economic models of local and global citizenship aspires to positively touch and transform the Earth.

 

Lenaghan earned the Mardee Jenrette Endowed Chair of Teaching Excellence and Anastasios and Maria Kyriakides Endowed Teaching Chair conferred by colleagues and benefactors. External recognition and engagements include Rotary International University Teaching Fellowship-INDIA; Fulbright Senior Specialist; National Endowment for the Humanities “Landmarks of American History & Culture” Summer Workshops, Kettering Foundation Multinational Confrere, and Council on Foreign Relations external adviser, External PhD Adjudicator in India, Philippines, and USA. He advises five scholarship foundations. He advances MDC-Study Abroad Indonesia 2017-present, the World Alliance of Universities in Community Development (UNAIR), Mellon’s Humanities Edge Undergraduate Research Program, and serves as External PhD Adjudicator through the Indian Academy of Social Sciences (Uttar Pradesh).

 

Dr. Lenaghan earned a BSFS from the Walsh School of Foreign Service and MA in Comparative Government at Georgetown University, CAGS and Ed. D. at Virginia Tech. Post-graduate: Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, Hawai’i, Wisconsin, FSU, Michigan, Brigham Young, Jackson State, U Miami, Saint Thomas, and Northeastern in multi-disciplinary education, conflict prevention, health promotion, community development.

 

Lenaghan’s globally advanced “connecting people to peace through service”, earth ethics and civic engagement in Australia, Canada, UK, Costa Rica, Norway, Iraq, Kenya, Dominican Republic, Turkey, China, Paraguay, Korea, Philippines, Germany, Jordan, Guatemala, Honduras, Indonesia, Israel, Lebanon, South Africa, India, Ecuador+  Board roles in Service For Peace, the Institute for Alternative Futures, and is adviser to community and student groups. He facilitates NGO, IGO and MNC projects in the Americas, Africa, Asia, Middle East, Australia and Europe via WAUCD, IUT, SGI-USA, and the Global Urban Sustainability Center.

 

His career reflects leadership roles in NGOs, IGOs, MNCs based in Washington, DC, New York City, Fribourg, Switzerland, Kansas City, Miami, Surabaya, and shorter commitments across the world, e.g., State Department’s Global Solutions Conversations.
